Travel and Tourism

This qualification is designed to support learners who are interested in learning about the travel and tourism industry alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in travel and tourism-related subjects. The course involves one exam which will be sat in January of Year 11 and three coursework units which will be completed in Years 11 and 12.
Course aims
· Inspire and enthuse learners to consider a career in Travel and Tourism
· Give learners the opportunity to gain a broad knowledge and understanding, of, and develop skills in the Travel and Tourism Sector
· Support progression to a more specialized level 3 vocational or academic tourism course or apprenticeship.
· Give learners the opportunity, in due course, to enter employment within a wide range of junior job roles across the travel and tourism sector, for example posts in travel agencies, visitor attractions and the tourist information centre to name a few.
Overview
Year 11
● Unit 1: (exam) The UK Travel and Tourism Sector – this unit covers the main types of tourism in the UK, the contribution that travel and tourism makes to the UK economy and the different component industries that make up the UK travel and tourism sector.
● Unit 2: UK Travel and Tourism Destinations – this unit covers what the different types of UK destinations have to offer, as well as locating tourist UK destinations and routes.
Year 12
● Unit 4: International Travel and Tourism Destinations – which looks at international travel and tourism destinations and gateways and reasons for their appeal to different visitors.
● Unit 3: The Travel and Tourism Customer Service Experience - this unit covers customer service, the skills and qualities needed to provide customer service and examples of good practice within the industry.

Studying BTEC Level 2 Travel and Tourism can lead to a wide variety of exciting careers and further study opportunities in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries. Students can progress into roles such as travel consultant, holiday representative, air cabin crew, tour guide, event coordinator, or hotel receptionist. Many also go on to work in visitor attractions, theme parks, heritage sites, or cruise ships.
This qualification also provides a strong foundation for further study, including the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism, Airline Cabin Crew and Aviation courses, or even university degrees in Tourism Management, Hospitality, or Event Planning.
